HELSINKI…GLOW IN THE DARKEST TIME OF THE YEAR

Pakkasilla Helsingin keskustasta etsii reitille mahdollisimman paljon sisätilan paikkoja.

– – – – –
When Helsinki freezes over you always want to find the quickest and warmest route to wherever you happen to be going. So we went from Anonymous, an installation set up at Finlandia Hall for the Lux Helsinki festival (because Remu and his Australian friend had lined up to take part in a piece that involved entering a booth, hollering and moving about in order to project an outlines against the wall of Finlandia Hall), to the Helsinki Music Centre and from there into the warmth of Sanomatalo (where we sat on benches looking very hip in white goggles), and from there we dashed over to the Central Railway Station to experience Water Light Graffiti. Whoever selected the sites for the Lux Helsinki events was certainly brilliant and considerate of those of us who loathe the cold. We were grateful because it was also extremely chilly in Helsinki last Tuesday evening.

Visitors to Finland may imagine that those of us who live in the North ski to work or school in the winter, skate over to a good ice-fishing spot, and, after enjoying the great outdoors, indulge in hot chocolate and pleasant conversation. Few of us practice the first two (and I suppose those who go ice fishing leave their skates at home nowadays) and hot chocolate is lovely when we remember to make it now and then.

Despite the frigid temperatures, our Australian friend David insisted that we take him skating at the rink by the Central Railway Station on Epiphany. Even Alisa put on her ice skates for the very first time. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d been on the ice, so I was happy to stay upright and slide along somehow. David certainly impressed us with his skills, even daring to race Remu and my godson Rami. After years of playing ice hockey, Rami’s without doubt the best skater of all. It sure made his godmother proud to watch him. At least we have one true native of the North among us!
and Happy New Year! xoxo
